Progress on the Union Square Design of City Walk

On Tuesday, June 26 at 5:30 p.m., the full Bond Implementation Commission met to hear the recommendations from the City Walk subcommittee and bond project updates. Below is the recommendations that staff will bring forth at the upcoming meeting of Hickory City Council on July 17, 2018.

City Walk Recommendations

The Bond Commission voted unanimously to accept the City Walk recommendations as presented (see below) during their quarterly meeting. The recommendations included the overlapping recommendations from the Hickory Downtown Development Association (HDDA) and originally from the City Walk Subcommittee which are as follows: Maintain historic feel, Additional lighting, Additional outdoor seating, and Keep connector across the lawn.

The current recommendations to the current Union Square Concepts are:

  1. Expanded footprint
  2. Storefront visibility
  3. Defined center path (connector across lawn area)
  4. Two large grass areas
  5. Improved lighting
  6. More outdoor seating
  7. Trees along perimeter roads
  8. Planters
  9. Remove bus stop
  10. Bulb-outs at cross walk for pedestrian protection
  11. Restrooms
  12. Music (atmosphere)
