Downtown Shoppers Want More
HDDA Shopper/Visitor Survey Results are in...

More parking, more dining options, more destinations open on Sundays, more advertising of downtown destinations and events!

A Downtown Shopper/Visitor Survey was conducted by the Hickory Downtown Development Association (HDDA) between the dates of March 2nd and March 18th, 2018. More than 1640 people responded and while a wide range of responses were received, the results provide clear insight into the priorities, concerns and ambitions those who visit downtown have for Hickory.

The priorities made clearest through survey responses include restaurants, parking, and Sunday hours.

Sixty-nine (69%) percent of respondents listed restaurants as one of the top five reasons they go downtown; and 54% of respondents said they wanted more dining options.

One out of every three listed parking difficulties as one of the top five reasons they sometimes choose not to come downtown; and 60% listed more parking as one of the top five things they would like to see improved.

One out of four respondents listed businesses not open on Sundays as one of the primary reasons they go elsewhere; and 36% cited more businesses open on Sundays as one of the top things they would like to see improved.

Figuring prominently among other reasons people go downtown were the Farmer's Market (58%), Events (35%), wanting to shop local (27%), and specific attractions such as craft beer (30%) and the movie theater (27%).

Panhandling and outside bathroom options were both named on 30% of the surveys as reasons respondents do not venture downtown.

Other changes encouraged by a significant number of survey respondents include

  1. More advertising of downtown destinations and events (35%)
  2. More businesses open later hours (30%)
  3. Brighter lighting (29%)
  4. and Decorative updates (24%)

Survey results will be shared with City Officials and Bond Commission members and the Downtown Association intends to create appropriate action items based on the results.
