The Hickory Music Factory (HMF) has embarked on a capital campaign to fund renovations to their facility at Jaycee Park in Hickory. Through the generosity of private donors and foundations, more than half of the proposed budget has been raised. The time has come to request the help and support of the community.
The Hickory Music Factory and the City of Hickory have enjoyed a productive partnership for the past 5 years. In support of the Life Well Crafted initiative, the Hickory Music Factory now provides the citizens of Hickory with music lessons, live performances, support for local schools, programs for the disabled, music therapy for the elderly, scholarships, and numerous other programs. These efforts reach approximately 20,000 of our citizens every year. The City of Hickory has had the vision to support this joint initiative by providing a city-owned building to house many HMF activities.
The facility has a proud history. It was originally constructed in 1944 as a hospital devoted to caring for victims of the polio epidemic then ravaging the area. It was the site of the celebrated "Miracle of Hickory", in which devoted volunteers and medical personnel from the community came together to produce some of the best results of care for polio patients in the world. Now that polio has thankfully been eradicated in the United States, it is very fitting that almost 75 years later the facility is once again supporting the children of Hickory. Unfortunately, much of the infrastructure of the building dates to its original construction, and there is no provision in the City of Hickory budget for restoration or updates. There is a great need, not only to maintain the building in safe working order, but to refurbish and rededicate the spaces that once held hospital beds and iron lungs to their new purpose.
Today, approximately 90 music lessons are provided each week by the vetted, top tier instructors at the HMF facility, and the demand is increasing. Improvements to the facility are urgently needed so that students will not be turned away due to lack of space, and so that the learning spaces can accommodate larger groups and performances. Planned improvements include additional teaching rooms, soundproofing, repair and upgrade of air conditioning, installation of microphone and headphone jacks in rooms for recording capabilities; and repairs and upgrades of interior surfaces and floors to provide a safer, more attractive, and better-sounding environment.
The goal to complete the project is $62,000, of which over $35,000 has been raised to date. HMF is asking for your financial support in these last few months of 2017 to reach this goal. All levels of gifts are welcome, and more substantial gifts will allow the opportunity for the names of the donors, or those they wish to honor, to become a permanent part of the new décor.
