August 21 - Hickory Community Theatre
60TH ANNUAL KAY AWARDS


The Guild at Hickory Community Theatre presents the 60th Annual Kay Awards on Saturday, August 21 at 8:00 PM in the Jeffers Theatre.

With over 75 nominees total in the categories of Best Actress, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Character Actress, Best Character Actor, Best Newcomer and Best Ensemble, this promises to be an exciting evening.

There are also awards for Volunteer of the Year, Tech Volunteer of the Year and the much-prized President's Award. Also featured in the evening is a sneak peek at Cabaret, the opening show of the 2010-2011 Season.

Admission to the event is free and no reservations are required. Semi-formal attire (jacket and tie) is requested. There will be a cash bar and free hors d'oeuvres provided by the Guild.

The Guild at HCT is the heart of the Theatre's volunteer corps and the Kay Awards is an annual celebration of volunteers, their efforts and achievements.

August 5-7 - HCT RugBug Theatre
DRAGON IN DISGUISE

RugBug Theatre at Hickory Community Theatre opens its funny and fanciful play "Dragon in Disguise" Thursday August 5 at 11 am in the Council Chamber Theatre at the HCT complex 30 3rd St NW in downtown Hickory.

The play for young audiences is about Drew the Dragon who wants to be human, and dresses to go to the palace. But there are problems - the tail problem, the fire breathing problem and the problem of convincing everyone that green skin is in.

The cast includes Kaylen Houlden, Bryden McGough, Grant McGough, Emma McGough,
Kate McGough, Sara Propst, Veronica Serrano, Gabrielle Simmons and Maddyson Wilson.

The youthful cast brings the entire tale to a happy conclusion all under an hour. The production is directed by Mark Woodard and Candace Simmons is Stage Manager.

" Dragon in Disguise" is presented Thursdays, August 5 and 12 at 11:00 a.m., Fridays, August 6 and 13 at 11:30 a.m. & 2:30 p.m. and on Saturdays, August 7 and 14 at 2:30 p.m.

August 18 - Hickory Museum of Art
YOGA IN THE GALLERY


The Hickory Museum of Art will be hosting free yoga classes on Wednesday, July 21 and Wednesday, August 18 from 6 - 7 PM in the second floor Coe Gallery. The classes, taught by Katheryn Harlan, will feature gentle yoga geared for beginners. Participants should wear comfortable and loose fitting clothing and bring a yoga mat and two beach towels or a yoga blanket.

These classes are presented in conjunction with the current exhibition FORMS ORBIT THE MIND: Michael McCall Retrospective 1970-2010.

August 5 - Taste Full Beans Coffeehouse
LOCAL POET'S BOOK RELEASE PARTY


Local poet and Founder of Poetry Hickory, Scott Owens' new book, a collaboration with Florida poet, Pris Campbell, entitled The Nature of Attraction, will debut at Taste Full Beans Coffeehouse in downtown Hickory at 5:30 on Thursday, August 5.

The Book Release Party will include a reading of some of the poems from the book and a recorded reading by Campbell. The book will be available for purchase and signing at only $7. Owens is also the author of two other recent books, The Fractured World (2008) and Paternity (2010), both of which will also be available that night.

Wine will be served, and Taste Full Beans' usual menu of snacks and beverages will be available as well.

Owens teaches creative writing and English at CVCC, is the Vice President of the Poetry Council of NC, Regional Representative for the NC Writers' Network, Editor of Wild Goose Poetry Review, and author of the column "Musings," published every other week in Outlook. His work has received awards from the Pushcart Prize Anthology, the Academy of American Poets, the NC Poetry Society, and the Poetry Society of SC.
